From Online Suppliers to
First-Hand Market Insight
Supporting an Australian jewellery founder as she explored China’s manufacturing and retail ecosystem for the first time.
The Story
After building her jewellery brand online for several years, an Australian founder travelled to Guangzhou for her first visit to China.
Like many growing e-commerce businesses, much of her supplier communication and product development had previously taken place remotely through online platforms, messaging apps, catalogues and video calls.
While this approach had supported the growth of the business, it also meant that many decisions were being made without first-hand exposure to the wider market.
The Challenge
The visit was not simply about finding more suppliers. She wanted to better understand how jewellery products were manufactured, compare materials and finishing in person, and see what options existed beyond the suppliers she had already discovered online.
With only a limited number of days in Guangzhou, the challenge was to turn a very large and unfamiliar market into a useful, structured research process.
The Approach
The visit was planned around more than simply finding products or collecting quotations. We used the time on the ground to look at suppliers, retail environments and the wider market together, turning what we saw into practical context for future decisions.
Defined priorities and the key areas worth exploring before the visit.
Met suppliers in person and looked beyond what could be assessed online.
Compared products, positioning, packaging and customer preferences in the local market.
Turned observations and conversations into clearer considerations for what to do next.
The Outcome
By the end of the visit, the founder had gained something that is difficult to obtain through online research alone: context.
Rather than leaving with a collection of disconnected supplier contacts, she left with a stronger understanding of the market itself, a clearer perspective on future opportunities, and greater confidence in evaluating suppliers and product development options moving forward.
For many international founders, that clarity becomes just as valuable as the products they come to explore.
